What are some “single stories” that exist in our classrooms?
What about holidays and awareness days/months (Black History Month, Women’s History Month, etc)? What single stories are told in our classrooms?
Action items - What can we do to expand the knowledge base of our students to move them beyond single stories?
It’s not always this or that…
Can be some fear factor on how you’re presenting.
A single story is so easy to carry around in your whole life. As a social studies teacher, it would be very easy to present a single story… this picture represents all the people in this region, for example..
School calendars are modeled around the Christian calendar… not inclusive to all students. Students who take a day to celebrate something within their own culture shouldn’t be penalized.
If you want to change children’s behavior, change adult behavior. If you want to change single story thinking, teach teachers about it.
Invest in diverse curriculum materials… Parents - educate yourself… COMMUNICATE! Empower students to help us.
Can we survey students - create a student organization?

Can we put together a survey asking kids if they want to create a Social Justice task force?
